Wheatbelt Resilience Program

The project was funded by the Commonwealth of Australia as represented by the Department of Health and Ageing.  The project finished on 30 June 2008.

This program aimed at suicide prevention by drawing public attention to the issue of suicide.

This was achieved by offering training for lay, professional persons and significant care givers to enable them to identify the warning signs of the person in crisis, intervene appropriately and refer the person into appropriate qualified help.

The focus was on education, and the program sought to represent suicide in a manner that motivated people to be more proactive in addressing this tragedy in their communities.

This was achieved through the establishment of Community Resilience Groups (CRGs) in selected communities throughout the Wheatbelt.

Then program comprised of counselling and education support, the development, assessment, evaluation and delivery of three suicide prevention programs (suicide prevention awareness, Resilience for everyone and community resilience group training) and training of GPs in suicide prevention.  The project provided support when suicide occurs and offered postvention assistance to individuals/families.

The target group was the entire population of the Wheatbelt region, estimated at 78,000 people including the Indigenous population (comprising 4.8%) of the region.

P
romotion of the project was undertaken through public media including radio, television news and printed material promoting the positive aspects of resilience and approaches to harm reduction and suicide prevention.
